Luxurious, contemporary bamboo retreat in the heart of Bali’s rice terraces

Snuggled in the heart of Tampaksiring’s scenic rice terraces and tropical rainforest lies Bambootel Sawah View – an artistic masterpiece created in bamboo. Each villa is uniquely crafted with stunning views of the sawah (rice fields in Indonesian). Bambootel preaches a story of luxury and sophistication converging with local craftsmanship and artistry.

Located within easy reach of cultural Ubud and amidst Bali’s sprawling central rice terraces, Bambootel Sawah View is a hidden paradise away from the main touristic areas. While Ubud might be a day trip from the hotel, there are plenty of attractions within reach.  Set within a small town, Tampaksiring, known for its quaint yet picturesque landscape, Bambootel still manages to lure travellers. The allure lies in the architecture of each villa and the sensational views it has to offer.

The greeting on arrival is a testament of true Balinese hospitality. On arrival, we’re greeted with a glass of champagne. The host proceeds to inform us that we’ll have complimentary cocktails at sundown that we could choose from their long list of cocktails. The hospitality here is unrivalled – the staff have a calm, approachable and personable manner that eases you right in. Furthermore, the technology reiterates their focus on hospitality – you can ring for a cleaner, you can call your host and much more with the press of a button!

There are three main types of villas to choose from (with more styles being built) – the one bedroom pool villa, the Sawah view pool villa and the one bedroom sky villa. I stayed at the Sawah View Pool villa which is the only 2 bedroom villa, that accommodates up to 4 guests, on the property at the moment. The villa has the choice of a closed bedroom or an alfresco bedroom.

The plan of the Sawah view villa is rather simple – a large living room and bar area along with a pool lounge with both a shallow and deeper infinity pool. The upper level comprises of two bedrooms and a netted hammock you can lay on. The villas are spread apart with plenty of shrubbery between them, offering a sense of privacy within your own villa.

The contemporary bamboo villas are kitted out with state-of-the-art facilities and amenities including king size beds, a television with Netflix access, a record player and a luxurious toiletry box. The revolving bathroom door, the bamboo clad shower and the waterfall accent are just some of the highlights of the Sawah View pool villa. The unparalleled views of Bali’s rice terraces are the linchpin of the resort.

Breakfast is served at the only restaurant, Maniq, on the property, and is included in the stay. The menu is uncomplicated with a variety of dishes to choose from. There is also a fitness gym on site. The villas are well equipped to keep you occupied for the whole day. They also provide tours at an additional cost like cooking classes, coconut oil making and romantic dinners. For a more relaxing experience, indulge in the property’s spa facility or their early morning walks and yoga sessions. There is a free shuttle service for guests twice a day to go into Ubud centre.

Staying in a bamboo villa is a Bali must do and there are plenty to choose from. Bambootel ups the ante with its extraordinary architecture, jaw dropping views and delightful hospitality. The infinity pool and open air rooms are the standouts, but nothing beats the comforts and facilities the hotel delivers.
