Secluded and affordable bolthole in tropical heaven

Cast away in Cape Panwa, this tropical retreat is a visual treat. An architectural and design marvel, this resort is very affordable for anyone wanting a sliver of tropical paradise. The resort brushes right up against Cape Panwa with views of peninsular cliffs on the southwestern coast dotted with yachts and little islands in the distance.
Situated on hilly terrain in the South east of Phuket, the hotel is in a secluded spot on the island. That’s not to say there isn’t a sprawl of hotels in the offing. A number of luxury hotels are springing up in the area in the hope that this less trodden part of Phuket will see more tourism.

While it’s on the quieter side, it’s definitely one of those up and coming areas you need to watch out for in Phuket. Access to Phuket town is easy- a short 30min drive to the town. Taxis, though, are harder to come by and expect longer wait times on Grab and Bolt. Hiring a car or scooter is an easier and cheaper solution and the hotel can help with renting a scooter.
The staff are warm but most couldn’t seem to speak English which doesn’t help with catering to a mostly foreign crowd that lands in Phuket. That being said, they are more than willing to help and resolve any issues that might threaten your otherwise lovely stay. The villa is stocked with water, fizzy beverages, tea, coffee and your usual hotel snacks. There’s also a hot plate for convenience, a mini fridge and basic cutlery.

There are two pools at the resort- one is the main central courtyard pool and the other, a much smaller rooftop pool is available to clients. There is also a restaurant/ canteen on site if you want a quick meal before you’re off to explore the island. There’s a selection of room types, depending on your budget, from deluxe double rooms to suites with Jacuzzis to private pool villas- there’s something for everyone.
The main design feature is the undulating pool in the central courtyard. Ground floor rooms have direct access to the main pool with little seating spaces poolside. The Babylonian hanging gardens are captivating and the landscaping is an Instagrammer’s paradise. The resort melds the modern with local and manages to spark interest-the stone carved pool shower is a nice touch, for example.

The Standalone villas towards the forefront of the property are possibly their most coveted asset. Upon entering, you are welcomed by the sight of large full width sliding doors that lead to the private pool. The toilet and bathroom are separate from the washbasin area, which has large transparent windows overlooking tropical planting. There is a separate door from the washbasin area to access the pool. Conveniently, there are a pair of bathrobes, slipper and pool towels for your use. The interiors are timeless and gorgeous, no matter what the weather outside. Watching the tropical landscape around the pool in the rain is as heartwarming as the sunlight streaming in from the sheers each day.

If I have to take away anything from my stay, it would be that visual elegance is very therapeutic and that’s what the people behind Panwaburi might be aiming for and it definitely delivers. The tropical shrubbery lurking along the edges of the central pool and Rapunzel-esque trailing plants are not just photogenic but induce a sense of calm.

The resort is very affordable- deluxe rooms with pool access start at a very reasonable GBP60 per night. The villas are a bit more at GBP130 per night. Featuring private pools, these villas are probably the most affordable of their kind you may find on the island. The rates are not inclusive of breakfast but you can include breakfast in the room rate if you wish.
If you’re looking for a spot to trade the honks of scooters with the chirping of birds, that is comfortable and also affordable, Panwaburi will not disappoint. The villa, in particular, is an abode of tranquility cocooned in the tropical landscape of the Andamans.
